After two years managing and curating the Art House gallery in Siem Reap, it was closed at the end of April 2008. This was due to the owners renovating the building and also because other galleries had opened filling the well needed niche for exhibiting contemporary art in Cambodia. The Art House was a platform for young artists to exhibit their work to a local and international audience. A number of these artists had their careers kick started after showing at The Art House and have now got recognition and well established careers.

Since then it has been good to focus more on teaching again, recently setting up art workshops for disadvantaged children in the Siem Reap area. The culmination of the Green Gecko’s (ex street kids) workshop based on an Animal theme was a display at the McDermott gallery. The paintings were on show for a week in December and sold through a silent auction. Everyone involved was amazed at its success. Every single painting sold (26 in total) for an incredible $1800. The money raised will now fund future creative workshops. Check out the article written in the Cambodia Daily in the article section.

A sad piece of news for the Cambodian Art scene was the passing of Svay Ken on Dec 11th, he was a great inspiration to us all, well respected and loved for his honest depictions of Cambodian life. Svay Ken started painting at the age of 60 when he was made redundant from his job as a doorman at the Raffles hotel in Phnom Penh. He was self taught and painted in a naive, narrative style, his art career spanned 16 years until he died aged 76. Although Svay Ken had been sick for a number of months he still managed to paint up until the end of November. He will be sorely missed, alot of young Khmers looked to him as the father of contemporary art in Cambodia.
